An epic 6-day Himalayan loop from Chandigarh to the celestial Chandratal Lake. Experience the dramatic shift from Manali’s greenery to the rugged, high-altitude deserts of Sissu and Jispa. Crossing the Atal Tunnel and the treacherous Kunzum Pass route, this journey blends raw off-roading adventure with the serene, mirror-like beauty of the "Moon Lake" at 4,300 meters.
Your journey starts with a drive from Chandigarh through the scenic Mandi and Kullu valleys. Using the new expressway sections, you'll reach Manali by late afternoon. Spend the evening at your hotel or exploring the local market. This is your primary night for rest before the sharp altitude gain tomorrow.
Leave Manali early (around 5:00 AM) to beat the tourist traffic at the Gulaba barrier. You will climb the legendary Rohtang Pass (3,978m), famous for its massive snow walls and panoramic views of the Pir Panjal range. After crossing the pass, you descend into the rugged Lahaul Valley at Gramphu. From here, the road turns into a rocky "off-road" track alongside the Chandra River. After a quick stop at Batal for lunch, you'll reach the ethereal Chandratal (4,300m) for an overnight stay in a high-altitude camp.
After a morning visit to the "Moon Lake," you’ll trace your way back through the bumpy Batal and Chhatru stretches. Instead of climbing back up Rohtang Pass, you will head toward Koksar and enter the Atal Tunnel's North Portal. Emerging on the other side, you'll quickly arrive at Sissu (3,120m). This route is significantly faster and smoother, allowing you to spend the afternoon relaxing by the Sissu Waterfall and Lake.
Today is a short, leisurely drive deeper into the Lahaul Valley. You’ll pass the Tandi confluence (where the Chandra and Bhaga rivers meet) and the town of Keylong. Arrive in Jispa (3,200m) by lunchtime. Jispa is known for its beautiful riverside setting and is the perfect place to unwind, walk along the Bhaga riverbed, or visit the nearby Gemur Monastery.
This day is dedicated to pure Himalayan beauty. You’ll drive further north toward Baralacha La (4,890m), one of the highest motorable passes on the Manali-Leh highway. Here, you can see the emerald-colored Suraj Tal (the Lake of the Sun God). After exploring the snow-covered landscapes at the top of the pass, you will drive back down to the comfort of your riverside camp in Jispa.
Start your final day very early to cover the long distance home. You will zip through the Atal Tunnel once more, completely bypassing the Rohtang traffic and the city of Manali. The drive continues down through the Kullu valley and onto the expressway, reaching Chandigarh by late evening.
